According to our delightfully smug friends at Pitchfork, Sufjan Stevens has begun work on a forthcoming LP. In the blurb, they cite an interview with Bryce Dessner – a member of the National – who is playing on the record:

…when asked if the new material sounded like Stevens’s older records, Dessner offered a resounding “no.”

So that got me thinking. Just where could Sufjan be headed on this new musical journey of his? Here are two directions I would definitely like to see more of:

There’s Too Much Love – Sufjan Stevens
This is actually a song Stevens has been playing live recently, so there’s a good chance it’ll be on the new record.

In the Words of the Governor – Sufjan Stevens
There’s less of a chance he’ll go this direction, but man oh man is this song great. It appeared on a compilation album called “Cue the Bugle Turbulent” for Believer magazine’s 2007 compilation disc. Sufjan needs to start a punk side project. This is fantastic.
